All of these have happened to me and it makes me happy that I am on my way to being an official meteorologist! So close!

This year I'll be using this blog to take you through my final year of college that will lead me to pursuing my first job as a official Broadcast Meteorologist. I will soon be posting videos of myself forecasting and also I will be updating you on the weather in either the Starkville, Mississippi area or the Memphis, Tennessee area.

I am so excited about this year and seeing what God has in store for me. I am going in to this year with my mind open to anything that comes my way. I am willing to go anywhere and to do anything to pursue this career for my life, but it is all in God's hands.

April 23, 2012- April 27,2013

Beautiful weather this week for Starkville, Mississippi- temperatures are moderately low though with cold temperatures moving in from the Northern part of Mississippi. We are going to warm up as we head through the week.

These are surface temperatures- and also the winds are shown.  You can see the prevalent wind coming from the North.

On the two day out look the winds change and start heading out of the South. This will bring us warmer temperatures as we head into the rest of the week.  This map is for WEDNESDAY. Wednesday our temperature will be a HIGH of: 82! So a beautiful day in store.

The image below shows moisture content throughout the United States. We are particularly dry today as you step outside you can tell this. Also much cooler. You can tell where that dry air is pushing into our area. There is a pronounced trough sitting over us.

The trough is well shown on the GFS vorticity model below.

The trough is over the North East and a large ridge has set up to our West.  This is allowing for our cooler temperatures and our strong winds throughout Mississippi today.

Starkville's Five Day Weather Forecast 

Tonight: high of 47F- possible isolated thunderstorms

Wednesday: high of 70F SUNNY

Wednesday night: low of 40F- clear

Thursday: high of 73F- clear and sunny

Thursday night: low of 49F- clear

Friday: high of 77- some clouds, but mostly sunny

Friday night: low of 53F- partly cloudy

Saturday: high of 79F- MOSTLY SUNNY!!

This week looks like a pretty good set up.  Today I believe will be the most we will see rain and or thunderstorm chances.  As we head into the night the possibility decreases as a high sets up above Mississippi and Tennessee, brining in cooler and drier temperatures throughout the northern part of Mississippi.  The next frontal passage looks like it will come through around Friday, but only to bring us partial clouds.

Weather Forecast for March 23- March 26

Hey everyone. I hope you have been enjoying the rain we've been having.  Haha. Do not worry it will soon be gone.  Right now we are under a system that has been stalling over the United States now for a few days. It is a cut off low that has kept the southern region predominately moist and cooler.  Cooler temperatures are on their way towards us here in Starkville and you can actually feel them right now.  This system will finally push out though, through the night and head Eastward.  Behind us though it looks like a little bit more precipitation on the way, but that should head North bound. Only bringing us clouds and maybe a little bit of rain tomorrow morning/ afternoon. Higher moderate temperatures should be in our future becoming more spring and summer like throughout the region.

Currently this is what the precipitation looks like over our region. Also you can see where the predominate clouds are located.

As you can tell from the image the precipitin is headed to our East as I said and is now lingering over all one Alabama.

As we head into our weekend our temperature are looking wonderful.

Friday:
Possible few scattered showers in the early morning. Clouds will linger and a high of 78F and a nightly low of 51F
Saturday:
The sun will be prevalent with a high of 74F and a nightly low of 51F
Sunday:
Again a beautiful sunny day with a high of 17F and nightly low of 52F

Monday- the beginning of our work week also looks very beautiful with a high of 80F!

March 6, 2012- March 10,2012

Well I hope everyone had a good weekend. There was a ton of crazy weather around this weekend, for those of you who did not know. There were 128 tornado reports all on Friday. Most of the tornadoes were in the Northern areas, including Ohio of all places.

The cold front that came through Friday, brought in much cooler temperatures that we have not really seen throughout the winter months we've had so far.

For your week, it is looking very nice, until we reach Thursday night, when rain and thunderstorms arrive. Definitely not as severe as we've seen.

Historical Facts For Your Entertainment

Thought it would be interesting to give you some history facts about TODAYS (February 26) weather from 1910-2004. Some interesting stuff and interesting trends. 


Ten years ago February 26, 2002 the Weather in Starkville looked much like today high of 68F and a low of 53F.  BELOW is the annual average precip for 2002.

1910 - Parts of Washington State were in the midst of a storm which produced 129 inches of snow at Laconia between the 24th and the 26th, a single storm record for the state. A series of storms, which began on the 23rd, led to a deadly avalanche on the first of March. By late on the 28th, the snow had changed to rain, setting the stage for disaster. (The Weather Channel)

1972 - The Buffalo Creek disaster occurred in the Buffalo Creek Hollow of Logan County in West Virginia. A coal slag dam on the Middle Fork of Buffalo Creek burst sending a fifty foot wall of water down a narrow valley killing 125 persons and causing 51 million dollars damage. Three days of rain atop a six inches snow cover prompted the dam break. (David Ludlum) (The Weather Channel)

1987 - A slow moving storm in the southwestern U.S. spread heavy snow from the southern and central Rockies into the Central High Plains Region. Totals in Colorado ranged up to 62 inches at Purgatory. Colorado Springs CO reported a February record of 14.8 inches of snow in 24 hours. Lander WY received four inches in one hour, 13 inches in seven hours, and a record storm total of 26 inches. High winds created near blizzard conditions at Colorado Springs. 1988 - Eight cities in the central and western U.S. reported new record high temperatures for the date, including Lamoni IA with a reading of 67 degrees. Temperatures in North Dakota were as warm as those in Florida. (The National Weather Summary)

1989 - An upper level weather disturbance brought snow to parts of the central U.S. which just one day earlier were enjoying temperatures in the 60s. Snowfall totals in Missouri ranged up to nine inches at Rolla. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1990 - Unseasonably cold weather followed in the wake of the winter storm in the northeastern U.S. Ten cities reported record low temperatures for the date, including Syracuse NY with a reading of 10 degrees below zero. Freezing temperatures in southeastern Virginia caused considerable damage to plants and fruit trees. The barometric pressure reading of 30.88 inches at Wilmington NC was February record for that location. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

2004 - A major snowstorm dumps up to 20 inches of snow in the Charlotte metropolitan area. Charlotte's third largest snowstorm on record accumulates 11.6 inches at the airport.

LA NINA

Things I didn't really understand about LA NINA that you may find interesting!! We are currently in a La Nina winter for those of you who did not know. 

"La Niña is characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific, compared to El Niño, which is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. "

"In the continental US, during El Niño years, temperatures in the winter are warmer than normal in the North Central States, and cooler than normal in the Southeast and the Southwest. During a La Niña year, winter temperatures are warmer than normal in the Southeast and cooler than normal in the Northwest."

So I would say our weather this year, even though it is not very characteristic of "winter weather", is actually very common for this time of year.

February 6, 2012- February 11, 2012 "When Thunder Roars Go Indoors"

In light of me having FOUR tests this week... I thought I would give you some interesting information that I've learned from my "Natural Hazards" class. It was rather enlightening and also interesting how much lightning does effect us as human beings.

Lightning:
Lighting causes an average of 85-100 deaths per year and also an average of 300 injuries. Lightning also causes on average $200 million per year in damages. Lightning contributes to 15,000 forest fires, usually out west.

The ratio of Male vs. Female in who gets stuck by lightning more is 84:16. The place most people get struck at is in open fields.

The highest number of deaths due to lightning strikes is in Florida- at a record 455.

Those who get stuck by lightning usually suffer chronic illnesses:
Depression (32%) Memory Loss (52%) Attention deficit (41%) Inability to sit long (32%) Sleep disturbance (44%)
Physically: External burns (32%) Numbness (36%) Severe headaches (32%) Dizziness (38%) Fear of crowds (29%)

You are more likely to get struck by lightning then to win the power ball.


Lightning could extend 10 miles out from a cloud.


Lightning is hotter than the surface of the sun (5,500° Celsius)-- 50,000° Celsius.


There are 16 million thunderstorms a year- 18,000 thunderstorms at any given moment.


LIGHTNING MYTHS:
-Never strikes in the same place twice- the Empire State Building get struck 22-25 times per year.
-Rubber tires are isolated- lightning can jump 10-20 feet.
-When boating...you need to seek shore- Tress on shore might be more dangerous.
-Caves are safe- Not if shallow
-Injured people carry a charge- no, they can be handled immediately after strike.


LIGHTNING SAFETY:
You need to learn the "lighting safe position" aka "LSP"

Well I hope you all learned a valuable lesson about lightning. It is nothing to take lightly. So next time there is a thunderstorm definitely be AWARE.

Hey everyone! I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend seeing as it was completely beautiful out all weekend in the Starkville area with moderate temperatures between the 50's- 60's during the day. It was wonderful to have spring like weather in Mississippi. Unfortunately, this beautiful weather will not last much longer... check out your FOUR day forecast below! 

Here is Starkvilles FOUR day Forecast:
Tuesday: High of 67- Partial clouds- But sun is still shining
Tuesday Night: Low of 51- Rain will begin around midnight
Wednesday: High 65- Mainly raining during the afternoon- Cloudy throughout the day.
Wednesday Night: Low of 52- Rain and Thunderstorms most likely before midnight
Thursday: High of 66- Mostly SUNNY! 5-10 mph winds
Thursday Night: Low of 51- Cloudy
Friday: High of 69- There is a chance of thunderstorms and showers so beware of that. More info as we progress throughout the week.
Friday Night: Low of 51- Chances of rain still- Cloudy


Still cloudy and still a percent chance for rain on Saturday, but luckily Sunday looks like a pretty day- gorgeous sunny skies with some partial clouds in the area, and pretty low temperatures, but overall beautiful!

So recently my Uncle who lives in Northeast, Ohio- specifically Beloit, Ohio asked me to forecast his weather... and since I've decided this blog isn't just going to be Starkville weather... I thought I would give it a try... so here we go. Haha. 

Beloit, Ohio is located about 60 miles away from Cleveland, Ohio, which is close to Lake Erie. Beloit is not completely effected by Lake Erie, but you could see some effects from it here and there.
Right now though Beloit's wind is directed out of the South, which is bringing in some warm air, rather than their cool weekend they just saw.
Now back to the good news. Beloit will be warming throughout the next days, with some peaks of sunshine through Tuesday. Unfortunately, a cold front will come through that will cause not only their temperatures to go back down, but also will bring rain into their area on Tuesday night through Wednesday, ending by Wednesday night.
This front should move through fairly quickly, with the sunshine returning Thursday!

Forecast for the week of January 24, 2012- January

Hey everyone! I hope you all were safe last night and took as many precautions as possible. There was some crazy weather that took place last night if you are not from the Southern region up to Illinois/ Indiana South region you probably did not hear much about it. The Storm Prediction Center posted updated this morning a map of where the tornados, strong winds, and hail were present across the region.

That is a picture of what happened last night and the storm reports from spotters and chasers. It was server weather and I hope everyone did as their News Station suggested to them.


As for this coming week here in Starkville, Mississippi, there will be some showers this week, predicted to start tomorrow night Tuesday, January 24th- Thursday, January 26th. The rain will then clear up on Friday, but will leave us with partial cloudy skies. This is due to a low pressure system that is headed our way that has developed showers in front of it because of all of the moist warm are we've been having. Behind it though will be drier air that'll clear up our area giving us cooler clear skies on Friday afternoon!

Conditions for Janurary 18, 2012.

So today, just as expected, has been wet, humid, and warm. Don't you worry though. These conditions will move out tonight. Strong gusts of wind from the North West will come through the South East region leaving us with cooler temperatures and clear skies tomorrow. 


Just some facts about the 18th in 2000 and 2006:


January 18, 2000:
Max Temperature: 68 F
Min Temperature: 55.4 F
Precipitation: O inches


This tells us that they were having a pretty warm day for January like we did today minus the rain.


January 18, 2006:
Max Temperature: 62.6 F
Min Temperature: 30.2 F
Precipitation: .77 inches


Again the same temperature that we experienced today, we experienced in 2006. The min also tells you that most likely through the night the weather took a turn for cooler weather.


But anyways just a little fun facts to look at our past, seeing the similarities between our weather now and a few years ago.

FIRST blog post! First time to write a weather discussion for Starkville, Mississippi.


Recently through our lovely town of Starkville we have finally been having traditional January weather trends. Last week we started off on Monday through Wednesday of non-stop drizzle as gloomy clouds filled the sky along with a huge front bringing in cold temperatures from Canada. This week... is not that different in the aspect of rain. Overnight we will start to see some showers that will continue throughout Tuesday (being the worst day for showers and also high temperatures) and long into the night and then will finally drift off and end on Wednesday. There will continue to be normal cool temperatures for January after Tuesday seeing as we will drop from a high of 71 degrees to 47 degrees on Wednesday.  Our temperature will rise after Wednesday as we make our way to the weekend, bringing along more clouds and rain to create a wet Friday. 


This month is definitely the month of gloomy skies and continuous showers. We will see what the next few weeks will bring to us in the following days.
